Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
